Challenger 35 Ketch Namotu

Idle ramblings about Challenger Yachts.  If you have any photos of your boat please e-mail them to me and I will post them here.  Over time, I'd like to develop this site into an area where owners of Challengers 32, 35, 41, 42 and 50's can exchange contact info and tips on keeping these boats in their prime.  Scroll down for Photos.

This is Namotu and First Light in Richardson Bay.  Probably '98?

One above is in Bellingham WA, and the other in SF at Treasure Island

Namotu in Sausalito, CA 35ft Challenger Ketch

Most of these pictures are of our boat.  The red awning and the interior are of another Challenger 35 ketch.  I've been wanting to do an aft enclosure on Namotu, but haven't figured out the logistics for the mizzen.

Some maintenance items, there isn't a system on the boat that I haven't been through:

In the Summer of 2003 I had a new set of sails made from Staaf Sails in Bellingham WA. www.sailoft.com I opted for 30 inches of roach on the main, and matching roach on the mizzen.  Way cool!  I was worried about the main passing the backstays (2) but this has not proven to be an issue, partly due to the Harken traveler system that I installed to spread the load on the mainsheet.

I made a dodger and this has greatly increased the comfort of using the boat.

I have removed the vanity area in the head, and moved the bulkhead behind the mast.  The bulkhead in the cabin was also removed and a hanging locker and propane heater installed.  This has made the already large interior much bigger and brighter.

Dripless packing gland was installed, Full blister peel and West System Epoxy, Windows have all been replaced, and caulked with the wrong product that is starting to react to the Plexiglas. (never go cheap on the caulk... the labor is always the biggest expense.)

I painted the hull with polyurethane (brush seamed to work better than the roller for the bubbles)  Turned our great!

I re-rigged all the standing rigging in 2002

I have re-plumbed the entire boat, and have filled all but 2 thru-hulls.  Engine intake and head outflow.

    New hot water tank

    New non-skid

And on... and on... and on...

Here is a link to some interesting photos of a bowsprit and a stern platform added to a Challenger 35

At the moment I'm working on the leaking windows... the old wood trim was all rotten, so I'm making some fiberglass trim rings.

Email me with any questions on these boats, I'm always happy to help.
